The Father-Daughter Bond

A photo essay project celebrating the special relationship between dads and their girls, no matter their ages

The Idea Behind This Project

Mothers are rightly celebrated in our society. They bring children into the world, and they generally do the lion’s share of the child-rearing, too. Everyone knows and appreciates that. And the father-son relationship is well-documented, even if it involves cliches like playing catch and going fishing. It’s my contention that the father-daughter bond is under-celebrated. Having a daughter changes a man more than having a son does. Maybe you disagree with that statement, but having fathered a son and then a daughter, I stand by it.

I want to explore, document and celebrate this wonderful relationship. I’m looking for dads and their little girls, no matter their ages, to be photographed and tell their stories.

Dads:

  • How did having a daughter change your life?
  • What do you love about her?
  • What do you worry about with her that you don’t worry about with your son?
  • What did you learn about yourself while raising a daughter?

Daughters:

  • What have you learned about men from your father?
  • What do you love about your relationship with him, and what do you wish was different?

The process

You will be photographed and interviewed in a setting (or settings) of your choice. At home, outdoors, in the studio – anything goes. The photos can be as formal or as casual as you want, or a combination. The interview process, such as it is, will involve an audio recording of our conversation, to be transcribed and edited later. You will choose which photo or photos will be included in the project, and you’ll receive high-resolution digital files from the session as a thank-you.
